This course is designed to provide students with the practical role-playing experience required by ADR Canada for an approved mediation course and to apply for the Qualified Mediator (Q.Med) designation. Specifically developed for students who have completed mediation training from various programs that do not have sufficient role-play hours.
Who Should Take this course?
This course is ideal for individuals who have completed mediation training from other programs outside of ADR Alberta/ ADR Canada Affiliates and are seeking to fulfill the evaluated role-play, and role-play hour requirement for their Qualified Mediator designation, or to take advanced ADRIA courses. It is designed for those from various training programs looking to bridge the gap in their role-play hours.
Note: If you have completed the MRU 165-hour credit program, you automatically meet the requirements to take this course. MRU students can register directly by contacting education@adralberta.com. Others should contact membership@adralberta.com to assess their program for equivalency.
What Will I Learn and What Skills Will I Gain?
By the end of this course, students will:
- Build confidence in applying their mediation knowledge in real-world situations.
- Gain hands-on mediation experience through structured role-plays in a variety of scenarios.
- Practice and refine key mediation skills such as active listening
- Understand the 6-Stage Interest-Based Mediation Model and how to apply it in practice.
- Receive detailed coaching and feedback from experienced mediation instructors.
What Can I Expect in Class?
ThiThis course will be delivered online over six sessions. The main focus in on role-playing. Each student will be the mediator in three role-plays of 55 – 90 minutes in duration and will be the role-player in six role-plays. There will be approximately 3 hours of prep each week. Each student’s final role-play will
be evaluated. Students must pass this role-play evaluation to receive a certificate for this bridge course.
Each session includes:
- Role-play exercises where students will rotate between acting as the mediator and playing other roles in the conflict.
- Personalized coaching and feedback on performance.
- Debrief sessions to reflect on learning and improve mediation techniques.
Class size is kept small (groups of three) to ensure ample practice time and focused feedback. Once three students are registered, session dates will be selected.

To register, you must have completed an approved mediation training program. If you are not an MRU student, please contact membership@adralberta.com to have your program assessed for equivalency. Students who completed the MRU 165-hour credit program meet the pre-requisites for this course. If your course has been approved, please reach out to education@adralberta.com to register.

- Course Fee: $1500 per student
- Credit Hours: 24 hours over 6 sessions
Breakdown of Sessions:
- Session 1 (3 hours): Introduction, review mediation model and skills, role-play expectations
- Session 2 (5 hours): Role-play practice and debrief (3 role-plays).
- Session 3 (3 hours): Review and role-play practice (1 role-play).
- Session 4 (5 hours): Role-play practice (2 role-plays).
- Session 5 (5 hours): Role-play Evaluations (2 role-plays)
- Session 6 (3 hours): Role-place Evaluation (1 role-play) and wrap-up.
